Project Update – July 23, 2026
Through June and July 2026 crews have completed the following work:
- Completed the Route 14 culvert, a storm sewer that will carry the relocated Flint Creek beneath the roadway.
- Railroad bridge construction. Crews completed sheet pile foundation work for the north bridge abutment (the structural element on each end of a bridge) and will begin pouring the concrete footing and walls over the next few weeks. As this work is underway, crews will shift to install sheeting to allow for the excavation and foundation work for the center bridge pier.
- Substantially completed work on North Avenue and Drury Lane. Crews completed storm sewer and water main installation work on North Avenue and Drury Lane followed by roadway curb and pavement installation. This area has been fully reopened to traffic with only landscaping restoration remaining.
- Continued work on storm sewer pump station. With building work largely complete, crews continue with electrical and HVAC work to support the facility.
In addition to continued construction of the railroad bridge structure, the contractor plans to begin advanced work for construction of the Route 59 culvert, which will also carry the relocated Flint Creek. This work will take place on Route 59 near Lions Drive and new traffic patterns will be in place to facilitate this work as described below:
Traffic Alert: Hough Street (Route 59) Lane Reductions Begin Week of July 27
Beginning next week, Hough Street (Route 59) will be reduced to one lane in each direction south of Northwest Highway as work begins on the next phase of the Route 14 underpass project. This stage includes construction of the culvert that will carry the relocated Flint Creek.
Traffic changes include:
- Northbound left turn lane from Hough Street onto Route 14 will be temporarily shortened due to adjacent construction. Consider alternative routes to proceed westbound on Route 14 to avoid traffic delays.
- Lions Drive at Hough Street will be temporarily closed. Barrington Park District visitors can still access Lions Drive from Route 14.
This is the first stage of Hough Street construction, and the temporary traffic pattern is expected to remain in place for at least one month. During this time, the contractor will also evaluate opportunities to complete additional work as part of this stage, which could increase the duration of these lane reductions.
